Getting your amateur radio licence

NERG Amateur Radio Classes

On-line training now available

We are pleased to announce that we now have on-line training available. For the Foundation Licence we have three video sessions, two cover the theory and regulations and the third covers the practical assessment.

This allows people to study at their own time and rate rather than being tied to a particular course time.

For advanced and standard licence we have most of the course available and will be conducting some additional sessions in the near future to complete the suite of videos.

If you know of anyone who would like to get their licence ask them to contact training(at) and we will pass on all the details.

There are two club members who can perform remote assessments so even in the current lockdown you can still get your amateur radio licence.

Regular Foundation training and assessment weekends

The club runs regular Foundation training and assessment weekends  these usually run over a Saturday and Sunday  from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Briar Hill Community Hall, Briar Hill, Victoria.

Please register to receive details by emailing training @  (Drop the spaces)

Training covers some very basic radio theory, safety, interference issues, regulations, and practical aspects of putting together an amateur radio station and making contacts.  The assessment consists of a multiple choice exam on the above subjects, and a practical assessment on setting up an amateur radio station and making some contacts.

The course is free for NERG Members; non-members  $35 which includes

  •   Training (All day Saturday)

  •   Lunch (Saturday),

  •   NERG club membership.

An additional $90  assessment fee per exam paper covers the written exam and  practical assessment on Sunday  (These fees go directly to the AMC to cover the cost of examination material and administration.) .

Those that don't pass the assessment or would like more time before attempting the exams or assesment are welcome to attend further NERG Foundation training days at no extra cost.

Assessment results will not be available on the day as the AMC (Exam provider) marks the papers and sends out the results.

Places are limited and bookings are required to ensure we have adequate exam materials..
